West Bay District

The total area served is more than 1.9 million square meters (20 million square feet), the length of the Pipe Distribution Network (PDN) is 28 kilometers (17 miles) of underground supply and return pipelines with pre-insulated steel pipe. The three operational plants are connected to the network and currently serving over 69 towers of Doha’s West Bay skyline. Qatar Cool serves such towers as government offices, ministries, hotels, residential, commercial, and retail complexes.

The Pearl Island

The total area served is 3.9 million square meters (41 million square feet) of the man-made island, the length of the Pipe Distribution Network (PDN) is 92 kilometres (57 miles) of underground supply and return pipelines with pre-insulated steel pipes with diameters ranging between 75 mm to 1400 mm. All Energy Transfer Stations (ETS) are linked to the plant through a Fiber Optic Communication Network allowing for centralized monitoring and control.

Gewan Island

The total area served is approximately 400 thousand square meters (4.3 million square feet), with a Pipe Distribution Network (PDN) extending 5 kilometers (3 miles) of underground supply and return pipelines constructed using pre-insulated steel pipes. Supplying chilled water to the Islands developments. GDCP provides a reliable and energy-efficient cooling solution that supports the island’s modern infrastructure and sustainability objectives.

District Cooling

District cooling entails the production and circulation of chilled water to multiple buildings through a network of insulated underground pipes. Cooled water is pumped from the central plant through the pre-insulated underground pipes connected to the building connections, which is called Energy Transfer Station (ETS). In the ETS, the coolness of the chilled water is used to chill down the water of the building through a Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE).

How it Works

  • Water is chilled at a central cooling plant
  • Chilled water is pumped through a network of underground insulated pipes to the customers’ building
  • An air-conditioning water system inside the customer’s building circulates the chilled water
  • Air is then pumped through the chilled water pipe of the air-conditioning system producing cold air

PLANT ONE
WEST BAY

Plant one was inaugurated in 2006 as Qatar Cool’s first cooling plant. The cooling plant is nestled amongst West Bay’s growing skyline, serving an area of more than 1.9 million square meters. The plant along with our two other West Bay plants is connected to a 28km underground pipe distribution network, allowing us to serve the entire district.

The plant has a cooling capacity of 25,000 Ton of Refrigeration (TR) and a Thermal Energy Storage Tank of 25,000 TRh. The cooling plant houses 10 centrifugal chillers.

IDCP
THE PEARL ISLAND

In 2010 we inaugurated the world’s largest district cooling plant on the then newly developed manmade island, the Pearl Qatar. Our cooling plant has a staggering cooling capacity of 130,000TR and serves the 3.9 million square meter island.

The Pearl Qatar houses numerous Heat Exchange Stations (HEX) around the island, allowing us to pump sufficient cooling capacity to our customers and keeping its reliability and efficiency, due to the sheer size of the island. Our system design operating criteria for our Pearl Qatar cooling plant is 0.976KW of power consumption and 2.20 US Gallons of water to produce 1 ton of refrigeration.

PLANT THREE
WEST BAY

The plant has a cooling capacity of 35,000 Tons of Refrigeration (TR) and a Thermal Energy Storage Tank of 25,000 TRh. It is unique in comparison to its sister plants. Plant three is our first plant certified with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

The plant uses Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) for irrigation as well as for process, significantly reducing the demand for fresh/potable water. The LEED Certification and its score reflect the total effects of the building on the environment during the construction and operation such as, Sustainable sites, water savings, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, recycled content, local/regional materials, Indoor environmental quality, innovation and design process and regional priority.

PLANT TWO
WEST BAY

The demand for district cooling in the area saw the need for a second cooling plant. Plant two became operational in 2009 with a cooling capacity of 32,500 Ton of Refrigeration (TR) and a Thermal Energy Storage Tank of 20,000 TRh. The cooling plant houses 13 centrifugal chillers.

As the population grew in West Bay so did the capacity of the cooling plants. The three plants offer a combined cooling capacity of 92,500 TR to the district. Each plant that followed the first increased its capabilities and capacity, adapting with the technological advancements and industry trends, whilst never compromising on the environmental impact.

GDCP
GEWAN ISLAND

The Gewan District Cooling Plant (GDCP) delivers sustainable and efficient cooling to the emerging Gewan Island development. Once complete, the island will span 400,000 square meters (4.3 million square feet) and feature a mix of residential, commercial, and leisure properties.

The plant incorporates a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system that uniquely utilizes seawater for cooling tower make-up, eliminating the need for fresh or potable water and significantly reducing environmental impact. Designed to provide a mechanical cooling capacity of 18,000 Tons of Refrigeration (TR), complemented by a 3,000 TR Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system, GDCP ensures reliable, efficient, and sustainable cooling to support Gewan Island’s modern infrastructure and long-term sustainability goals.
